How To Start

Starting is hard.

Humans are wired to keep things comfortable and safe, to stay within our comfort zone. But deep down, we all want to create, build and share, to feel that mixture of fear and excitement, to move towards doing something that is a true reflection of who we are.

To create is defined as bringing something into existence. Essentially, creating is at the heart of physically expressing yourself and putting yourself out into the world. Every single thing in your world was created by you, by your choices, by your engagement with everything and everyone around you. It’s the energy of what you are, whether you acknowledge this or not.

If you’d like any part of your life or your world to be different, you can start by creating and generating new possibilities. Whatever your situation might be, you can choose to move in the direction of your dreams—you just have to decide to begin.

Hearing stories of other people who have gotten started on their own journeys is a great way to help you see something is possible and to get practical tips on to get there. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Beyond the Studio: a podcast series that focuses on the behind-the-scenes work of visual artists—how they're supporting and sustaining themselves and their creative work
  • Micro-Factories: a beautiful book featuring 23 entrepreneurs who redefine their own industries by exploring the boundaries of creation & production
  • From Scratch: a podcast series with business, social & cultural leaders speaking candidly about the launching process

At the end of the day, you can't think your way through things so as Roosevelt said 'do what you can, with what you have, where you are.'
